ACT Environment Minister Simon Corbell says the Government is unlikely to introduce a ban on plastic bags. It has not decided how much it will charge people per bag but it will probably be between 5 cents and 30 cents. Mr Corbell says it makes more sense to introduce a levy instead of a total ban. "I think a ban is unlikely because it is a very difficult thing to put in place simply because it's a very difficult thing to put in place," he said. "I think a levy is more likely to be accepted by consumers and is more likely to help reduce the number of bags while still making sure they're available for people who need them." Mr Corbell says they have not decided what to do with the money once it is collected. "Personally I think some sort of scheme where the money goes into a trust say for environmental projects here in the ACT would be a good way to go," he said. "That's some of the detail we now need to work through." He says the Government will spend the next six months drafting legislation to introduce the mandatory levy.
