IRWINDALE, CA -- Joe Peng, President of Gibson Fiberglass announced that Jushi Group and Gibson Fiberglass has developed a high strength Eglass fiberglass reinforcement, aimed at composite applications requiring better corrosion resistance and enhanced physical properties. E6 Enhanced Glass Fiber™ is currently being produced in trial quantities by Jushi/Gibson. "This innovation is the culmination of nearly three years of development work by Jushi plant's Science and Technology Group", according to Joe Peng, President of Gibson Fiberglass. "The enhanced physical properties of E6™ will benefit composite applications with higher strength demands such as wind energy, high pressure pipe, and sucker rods. The improved chemical resistance of E6™ will improve the performance of composites used in oil and chemical process equipment as well as high voltage electrical applications." "E6™ will help to advance the use of fiberglass composites when competing with other materials such as wood, aluminum and steel," says Hack Wall, Gibson's Vice President of Technical Support. "Due to improved strength characteristics and better chemical resistance than traditional E-Glass, E6 Enhanced Glass Fiber™ will allow the manufacture of lighter, stronger, laminates with better corrosion performance properties." In addition to the end-use benefits of E6 Enhanced Glass Fiber™, this glass formulation has a much lower carbon footprint than traditional E-glass fiber. According to extensive testing conducted by the Science and Technology Group of Jushi, there is a 90% reduction in emissions of nitrogen oxide compounds and an 80% reduction in waste gas emissions. Particulate emissions are also greatly reduced. The enhanced manufacturing process allows for zero waste water discharge, and a significant reduction in process waste glass fiber. Currently, E6™ is being evaluated by a select group of customers in North America. "We expect to fully commercialize E6 by the first quarter of 2010," according to Ron Adams, Vice President of Technical Sales for Gibson. "We will be working closely with customers to make sure there is a smooth transition to the new E6 Enhanced Glass Fiber™ products as they become available." "Our exclusive distribution partner, Composites One, will also play an important role in helping to introduce E6™ to the composites market," says Adams. "Composites One's highly trained Technical Sales force, along with Gibson's Technical Service Team, will be able to assure composite manufacturers are able to realize the benefits of E6™." E6 Enhanced Glass Fiber™ is part of the next generation of reinforcements being developed by Jushi/Gibson. According to company officials, $1.5 Million USD is being spent in 2009 on research and development to improve glass fiber performance in thermoset and thermoplastic composite applications.
